Le mouvement Open Source promeut le développement et la diffusion des logiciels libres (ou logiciels open source) par le biais de l’Open Source Initiative (OSI). Un logiciel "open source" doit répondre aux dix caractéristiques suivantes, précisées dans la définition officielle: (1) libre redistribution, (2) inclusion du code source, (3) possibilité d’applications dérivées, (4) intégrité du code source de l’auteur, (5) pas de discrimination contre des personnes ou des groupes, (6) pas de discrimination contre des domaines d’application, (7) distribution de la licence, (8) licence non spécifique à un produit, (9) licence sans restriction pour les autres logiciels distribués avec le dit logiciel, (10) licence technologiquement neutre.
